The TriggerCam Scope Camera

Being able to relive a moment is a benefit that cameras have been giving us for over 100 years. But, sometimes having a camera makes it difficult to be present in that moment because it’s something that gets in the way and requires a lot of prep and planning to use effectively. This is especially true in the shooting sports as a whole. The last thing you want to worry about before a stage or after finally spotting that trophy buck is to have to get out, set up, and focus a camera to be able to get just one angle of this moment of your life. Even if you do all of that, it can be hard to showcase what was happening because all your footage is third person. Fortunately for the scoped shooting community, Products our coming out to help us with this issue.

TriggerCam is not the first product that offers an ability to break away from the norm, but it is one of the best. There are many other products that allow a user to attach a phone to their optic for a first person recording. These products have their place and can be a huge asset to a shooter, but few stack up to the TriggerCams quality and ease of use for a rifle optics.

What is it?

TriggerCam is a Wi-Fi enabled camera system that attaches to the ocular body of your optic to allow for first person recordings without inhibiting the shooters ability to effectively use their rifle. The main characteristic that sets TriggerCam apart from their competitors is that it is an all encompassed housing. There is essentially just one piece that easily attaches to the scope body and is designed to instantly line up with the line of sight of the optic.

What makes it different?

There are a number of features that make the TriggerCam what it is. The ease of set up and use is by far the most important one. Being only one piece, the install takes less than five minutes and it can be set up for its first video within another 5 minutes at the range. After it is set up there is no need to continue to fine tune the angle or position of the camera. It is secure enough that even bumps and jars do not disturb the placement or hinder its ability to capture clear video through the optic.

Having only two buttons, it is one of the most user friendly products you will find. There is only a power button and a Wi-Fi button. Everything else is done via the app, which is also very straight forward.

Next would be the size. The housing only adds 1.5 inches to the ocular body length, meaning that (Depending on the optics eye relief) you will have plenty of room for higher caliber rifles to recoil without the housing making contact with your face. This can be an issue for products that add substantially more material between your eye and the scope.

One of my favorite features is its storage capability. The app gives you the ability to either store the footage directly on your device or onto a micro SD card placed in the TriggerCam itself. This allows you to take tons of footage without it bogging down your phone while you’re at the range, on a hunt, or instructing a long range course.

Finally, we come to the video quality. Being that it is one system, it’s nice to not have to worry about my phone camera being good enough to capture a clear video. I typically do not have the latest model phone and I always felt like I was behind when trying to capture videos for competition, this eliminates that problem and is a lot cheaper than putting a $1000 phone on my scope. With a built in 1080p camera TriggerCam solves that problem.

I have only found one con so far and that is just because I am picky. The microphone hole is on the front of the housing just above the Wi-Fi button. This means if you are speaking as the shooter during a video it gets a bit muffled and if you turn the volume up then the action of the rifle is very loud. This is by no means a deal breaker for me but hopefully something that can be improved for future models.

Now that we have gone over the product a bit, let’s talk about how it can be used to benefit you as the shooter.

Hunting: This gives you the ability to relive the moment you got your trophy buck or prove to your friends that the “one that got away” actually existed and isn’t a figment of that mid hunting trip nap. It can also give you the ability to see what is happening in the scope of a new shooter. You can see what they see as they are about to take their first harvest and give them tips and advice to make sure it is successful.

Competition: Not only do people like to see footage of competition shooters to see what makes them so good, they also like to see what the shooter sees. This can give them that rare glimpse, through the optic of a professional, of what a good stage looks like. It can also be very useful in the analysis of your own shooting strengths and weaknesses. Running a barricade and being able to see exactly where your reticle goes after each shot can point towards certain positions that need more work or if your recoil management is lacking.

Long Range Instructing: This is the Holy Grail for a long range instructor. Due to the ease of set up and use, I could transfer this between student’s guns with ease and diagnose issues they may be having. Being able to watch exactly what they are doing in real time can help cut down on the time required to determine what needs to be worked on and can help you show them a replay of shortfalls and improvements. It can also be a great tool for demonstrating how reticles work, since you could actively be engaging targets as you discuss the reticle while they watch on the screen.

Overall I think this is a great system that has a lot of benefits for competition shooters, hunters and instructors alike. This has been a product the shooting community has been interested in for a while and I think TriggerCam has set the standard for first person recording for scoped rifles.
