The Experience of a First Goose Hunt

It’s 21 degrees outside, the suns just breaking over the horizon and 6 shooters are laying in a field attempting to stay quiet and still.  The sounds of “honking” in the distance begins and suddenly the sounds of feathers cutting through the air is heard; our prize has arrived.  A skein of Canadian geese fly directly overhead and the desire to pop up and start shooting right then is heavy.  Just as they fly out of our limited site another “honking” pattern begins from the shooter to my left and the geese turn back.  This time more curious and deciding to descend upon the strategically placed decoys directly in front of us.  The anticipation is unbearable, and restraint is tested.  Finally, after what seems an eternity of will power the command is give, “TAKE THEM”.  This is the moment I’ve been waiting for…after seasons of Duck Dynasty, watching geese fly above my house and owning a water fowl shotgun for years, I pop out of the blind, site in on a goose and pull.  Goose down!  Re-engage on another and pull.  Goose down!.  I’ve just bagged my first two geese.  We quickly police the area of spent shells, wads and dead geese, then reset for the next wave.  I couldn’t ask for a better introduction to the world of goose hunting and what an amazing experience.
